It has been 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story movie debuted, launching Pixar as a major film company and bringing viewers to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed recently, providing a glimpse into the storyline but keeping fans wondering how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Toys

In the teaser shows the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a latest toy, one that alarms the familiar toy group. Bonnie gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the characters appear to consider it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.

Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer doesn't touch on is what Woody is returned with his friends in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a fair and assisting prize toys find good homes.

Certainly, Pixar will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have come back with him. And where is Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his fresh path was hand over his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), entrusting her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip displays the insignia attached to her outfit.

Hopefully she is still the key figure among the group.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
