"Any idea when you're interviewing the band?" a message reads. "I wanted to ask if I can become their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also desires to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. A host of famous fans have also begged for the position.

The evidence suggests something is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career playing gigs at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the most iconic ensembles, they're a tight-knit trio. Their visuals frequently show them walking in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such boundless exuberance you inevitably think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the biggest honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to form a group."

Grammy Nod

The group are speaking from a break, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the nomination isn't lost on the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The project emerged from a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that strange in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words track departures and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That recent confidence called for a new sound – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

One man left Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Path

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an worldwide fan base.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was a young child," says Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
